French American Wallpaper

At French American Wallpaper, we create luxury wallcoverings for industry professionals. Ideal for residential and commercial spaces alike, our original designs are custom printed for each project. Perfect for discerning clients who crave head-turning, exclusive design solutions.

Our collections stem from original artwork, created in-house. Unlike traditional wallpaper, our wallcoverings are adapted to your specific space, for a bespoke mural that’s uniquely yours.

While our quality is unrivaled, we believe it’s our process that really sets us apart.

Initially, our partnership and company were forged out of necessity. Unable to find the products and designs we envisioned from existing wallpaper lines, we teamed up to create our own.

Over the years, we’ve honed our process and uncovered our brand’s voice: one that’s committed to designing top-quality wallcoverings, delivering exceptional service, and creating with soul. It’s this process that has earned us our reputation as craftsmasters in the design industry — one of originality and artistic expression, excellence, and trust.

Each collection at French American Wallpaper follows a parallel origin story. A multi-step process that translates a spark of inspiration into a full collection of luxury wallpaper. From hand-crafted original artwork to the highest-quality commercial grade wallcoverings, printed right here in L.A., we oversee our products with care and pride every step of the way.

How We Work

The Inspiration

Our concepts begin with a single inspiration, typically stemming from a historical art precedent or natural element. An artist, architect, movement, or technique that speaks to us.

Then, we dive into the research phase, unearthing details that bring our vision into focus. We’re moved by stories, viewpoints, and places around the globe. True to our name, each collection is eventually expanded into a color story inspired by a region with heavy French influence, from the streets of Paris to the lush islands of French Polynesia.

But first, they’re distilled down to a single element, thought, or idea. A single word that moves us to create, explore, and imagine. This notion guides us from beginning to end as we slowly discover the final product.

The Experimentation

With this spark of inspiration, the creative process begins. All of our collections are created in-house, where we draw on our training in studio arts, set design, graphic design, and custom wall finishing. Brushes in hand, we produce iteration after iteration of original, handcrafted artwork.

We rely on a range of fine art techniques and materials: dry brushing, watercolor, inks and pigments layered and applied in swirls, drips, and drops. Capturing movement, form, and emotion until we develop the right piece to serve as the foundation for our collection.

The Transformation

From here, fine art meets modern technology. We play with form and scale, cutting, collaging, stretching, and reshaping the original handmade artwork until we achieve the desired design for our wallcovering. This process can take months as we explore numerous iterations and refine each detail.

We also experiment with printing techniques, testing the product on a variety of materials and finishes to find the perfect pairing to showcase the final design.

The Final Product

At French American Wallpaper, all collections are custom-printed on rich, quality substrates that exceed all commercial standards. Our designer wallcoverings are durable enough for any high-traffic area. They’re also fire-and-moisture-resistant, making them perfect for bathrooms, hallways, and kitchens in residential, hospitality, and commercial spaces.

In the end, our goal is more than just a beautiful, luxury wallcovering.

We strive for designs that transform their environment. That’s why we print each product to order, ensuring a custom artwork that’s perfect in scale and scope. Tailor-made just for you.

Our luxury wallcoverings are thicker and more durable than traditional wallpaper. Heavyweight with added flexibility, they wrap around corners and edges with ease. Because of the scale and quality of our products, we always recommend professional installation.

We’re proud to offer a product made with partially recycled materials. Our designs are printed with VOC-free inks, for an environment that’s healthy and safe as well as beautiful.

At French American Wallpaper, we take our time — handcrafting and carefully curating bespoke wallcovering collections for discerning clients. Our process is personal, expert, and time-intensive, and our products are second to none.

Romain Bouticourt, Co-founder and Art Director

French born, graphic designer Romain Bouticourt grew up all over the world since he was 2 weeks old. With his unusual upbringing and European sensibilities, he brings a distinct sophistication to his work with the company.

In 2006, after arriving to Los Angeles from France to continue his studies in graphic design, he fell in love with the city’s distinctive lifestyle. Years later, Bouticourt then refined his expertise at a design firm in Paris on projects ranging from international luxury hotels to sprawling private residences.

Experiencing these two iconic and dominant, yet paradoxically different cities, played a significant role in shaping his views, in life and with art.
